The proposed Secretariat-cum-Assembly complex will span 20 lakh square feet and consolidate all state government departments, news agency PTI reported. The project is estimated to cost ₹1,200 crore and will be developed as an eco-friendly facility.
The complex will include conference halls and public service centres, along with advanced fire safety systems and accessibility infrastructure for persons with disabilities. It will also provide ample vehicle parking and modern facilities for government staff.
The historical buildings within Fort St. George will be preserved as a heritage site for future generations.
“The new project, estimated at ₹1,200 crore, will span 20 lakh square feet in Chennai, integrating all government departments into a modern, accessible, and eco-friendly facility while preserving the heritage of the existing Fort St. George,” Vijay said.
The Chief Minister said the state government has control over only a small portion of the 107-acre Fort St. George campus, approximately 4 acres, while the remaining area is managed by the Defence and the Archaeological Survey of India.
He said consolidating all government departments into one modern and accessible complex is necessary to ensure efficient administration.
“To ensure efficient, world-class administration for the coming century, it is necessary to consolidate all government departments into one modern, accessible, and eco-friendly complex,” Vijay stated.
Vijay also announced the establishment of a Tamil Nadu Olympic City in Chennai, which will be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority. The Olympic City is aimed at creating an integrated sports hub offering athletes advanced training and support facilities, news agency ANI reported.
The Olympic City will feature world-class sports arenas and state-of-the-art sporting equipment. It will also include dedicated Sports Science and Sports Medicine centres and a High Performance Training Centre.
The facility will further provide modern infrastructure, including accommodation for sportspersons and coaches.
The announcements place the proposed Secretariat-cum-Assembly complex and the Olympic City among the state government’s major planned infrastructure initiatives, while the proposed Motor Sports City is also part of the broader development plans announced for Chennai.
